My son, Sebastian, turned 15 the other day. Amazing, huh? He really is a fantastic son. In his card, I wrote that I'm not necessarily the greatest in expressing my gratitude for having him in our house, but I really am grateful. I could brag about him to no end, but he's at the age that he'd probably want me to keep quiet.
I've been working on the novel I started on March 1. So far, I'm about 62,000 words into it. I figure I have about another 20,000 words to go. Initially, I hoped to have the first draft done by the end of the month but that's looking increasingly problematic. Still, I really like how it's coming around.
What else?
One of my stories, "After the Riots," was just published in Atticus Reivew's "Protest" theme issue. Here's a link. I've been happy by the response it's getting. I'd like to think it's one of the more "powerful" things I've written, but it's also a bit of an enigma. Hopefully, in a good way.
For me, the key word in the story's title is "after." As in, how can we move past a tragedy? Or a horrible political situation? Yes, the tragedy will always remain in our memory, but there has to be a way of moving past the grief, the recriminations, the distrust. That, to me, is what the story's about.
But, yeah. Please give the story a look. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
